How zinc oxide protects your skin
Zinc oxide particles sit in a thin film on top of your skin and handle UV in two ways: absorbing most of it and reflecting or scattering the rest. Unlike chemical filters, which each cover a slice of the UV spectrum, zinc oxide alone spans nearly the entire UVB and UVA range, including UVA1, the long rays that penetrate deepest and drive photoaging. That's why formulators call it a true broad-spectrum filter.
It has two other advantages: it's photostable, meaning it doesn't degrade in sunlight the way avobenzone does, and it's non-sensitizing, which is why dermatologists reach for it first for reactive skin, rosacea, and post-procedure care.
What percentage of zinc oxide do you need?
- Under 10%: usually a supporting filter in hybrid formulas; not enough for standalone broad-spectrum coverage.

- 25%: the FDA ceiling. More isn't better past this point; the formula just gets harder to spread.
Zinc oxide vs. titanium dioxide
They're often paired, and for good reason. Titanium dioxide is excellent against UVB and short UVA but fades in the UVA1 range; zinc oxide covers UVA1 but is slightly less efficient in UVB. Together they cover the full spectrum with lower total mineral load, which improves texture and reduces white cast.
Is nano zinc oxide safe?
Micronized and nano-scale zinc oxide is what makes modern mineral sunscreens go on clear instead of chalky. The research consensus, reflected in FDA and European SCCS reviews, is that zinc oxide nanoparticles do not penetrate healthy skin beyond the outermost dead layer. Is zinc oxide reef-safe?
Zinc oxide is the filter of choice in reef-conscious formulas. The filters implicated in coral bleaching and banned in Hawaii and Key West are oxybenzone and octinoxate, both chemical. Non-nano zinc oxide is the standard reef-safe active.

Yes, and you should. Retinoids and exfoliating acids increase sun sensitivity, and a gentle mineral SPF is the standard morning pairing.
